There are thousands of wedding traditions and customs throughout the various cultures of the world, and it is obvious that some of these traditions are more popular and widespread than others. The tradition of showering a newly wed couple with rice happens to be one of these more famous wedding traditions, although many of the couples that choose to incorporate it into their wedding know not of its rather interesting origin or history.
The tradition dates back to ancient Hebrew, Assyrian, and Egyptian societies. Back then, throwing food at newlyweds was a symbol of fertility and growth, since small seeds grow into larger plants. There are countless variations of this tradition, for almost every culture around the world has its own take on it. Moroccans throw raisins and dates, Italians throw sugared nuts and sweets, various other European countries throw eggs and wheat, and Americans throw rice. No matter where the tradition is exercised however, the message it sends remains the same.
